Victims' Charity Deputy Faces Criticism Over US Tourist Photo
Andrée Murphy, deputy director of Relatives for Justice, visited a replica house from the 1983 film A Christmas Story in Cleveland, Ohio, in January. She posed for a photo holding a Red Ryder BB gun next to the Christmas tree in the living room.
The house serves as a tourist attraction and museum where visitors can view locations from the film and take pictures with the BB gun. Relatives for Justice operates in Belfast and Dungannon to support victims' families.
A family of a West Belfast plastic bullet victim called the photo highly inappropriate. They stated that Murphy's action shows a lack of respect for people the organisation represents, including those who lost loved ones to gun violence.
Murphy writes a column for the Andersonstown News. She has expressed support for Christmas traditions in her writing.
Relatives for Justice has faced recent media scrutiny. Stories covered a complaint to the Charity Commission from three years ago and comments Murphy made last November about the DUP and Orange Order.
