Utility Regulator Approves NIE Networks Licence Changes for Shared Grid Costs
The Utility Regulator has approved modifications to NIE Networks' Distribution Licence. The changes implement the Department for Economy's decision on fairer grid connection costs.
The modifications shift responsibility for electricity distribution network reinforcement costs from individual customers to all Northern Ireland electricity customers.
The regulator published a consultation on the proposed changes on 15 January 2026 under Article 14 of the Electricity (NI) Order 1992. The consultation closed on 17 February 2026.
NIE Networks provided the sole response to the consultation.
The decision paper includes an Article 14(8) notice, the licence modifications, and NIE Networks' response as annexes.
The modifications take effect on 18 May 2026.
