Infrastructure Minister Launches Recruitment for Roadworkers and Civil Engineering Trainees
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has started recruitment for Industrial Road Workers and Trainee Civil Engineering Assistants. The positions support maintenance and improvement of Northern Ireland's road network. Applications opened today and close on 31 March 2026.
Road Worker roles involve joining teams across Northern Ireland. Duties include repairing road defects, cleansing gullies, and cutting grass. Workers also deliver winter gritting services and respond to road incidents to keep networks safe and efficient.
The Trainee Civil Engineering Assistant programme runs through a Skills Academy with Belfast Metropolitan College. It provides four weeks of paid pre-employment training. Participants receive support and can earn industry-recognised qualifications for positions such as road inspector, lab technician, or site supervisor.
Liz Kimmins stated that the Department for Infrastructure needs skilled people to maintain and manage roads. She noted that the roles involve essential maintenance and offer careers in public services.
Belfast Met Principal and Chief Executive Damian Duffy commented on the partnership with the Department for Infrastructure. He said the programme delivers training to build skills for civil engineering careers and supports public services across Northern Ireland.
