Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Blames UK Funding for Road Maintenance Shortfalls
Stormont's Department for Infrastructure manages construction and maintenance of all roads in Northern Ireland, including local roads. Sinn Féin minister Liz Kimmins blames insufficient funding from the UK government for shortfalls in road upkeep.
The Northern Ireland Executive gets funding set to match England service levels, with adjustments for higher local needs and costs, according to independent economic experts.
Road maintenance issues appear in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Councils handle much of the road work south of the border.
Ireland's central government provided councils with a supplementary road maintenance grant of €1.5 billion this year, a 13 percent rise from last year.
