Public Consultation Opens on Restrictive Interventions in Northern Ireland Schools
Education Minister Paul Givan launched a public consultation on draft guidance for the use of restrictive interventions in educational settings across Northern Ireland.
The guidance seeks to cut back on restraint and seclusion. It requires any use to be lawful, proportionate, trauma-informed and focused on the child's needs.
Givan stated the guidance offers direction on when and how to apply such interventions. He said the goal is to reduce their use to protect vulnerable learners.
The minister noted the guidance fits school operations. It supports positive methods for children to access learning. It sets requirements for recording and reporting serious incidents, including all seclusion cases.
Givan called the consultation key to safeguarding children and young people. He said it provides rights-based direction for educational settings.
He urged those involved in children's education and wellbeing to respond. The input will shape the final guidance to meet learners' needs and rights.
The consultation ends on 4 June 2026. Documents and details of online events appear on the Department of Education website.
