Family Plans Walk and Ball for 10th Anniversary of Buncrana Pier Tragedy
Louise James plans a walk and a gala ball to mark the 10th anniversary of the deaths of five family members at Buncrana pier. On March 20, 2016, her partner Sean McGrotty, aged 49, sons Mark, 12, and Evan, 8, mother Ruth Daniels, 57, and sister Jodie, 14, died when their car slipped into the sea. Her baby daughter Rioghnach was rescued.
The walk starts at 11am on March 22 from Buncrana Play Park to the RNLI station at Ned’s Point. Participants are asked to wear red or white. A suggested donation is £10 or £25 per family. Registration is available online or on the day.
A gala ball is scheduled for May 8 at The Ebrington Hotel in Derry. That date is Ruth Daniels' birthday. Tickets are limited and available by email.
A Mass takes place at 7pm on March 20 in Holy Family Church, Ballymagroarty. All are welcome.
James aims to raise funds for Lough Swilly RNLI and emergency services involved, including Buncrana Fire Service, Northern Ireland Fire Service, NOWDoc, Greencastle Coast Guard, Rescue 118, An Garda Siochana, Malin Head Coastguard, ambulances, undertakers, Donegal County Council marine engineer, and Father John Walsh.
She credits Sean McGrotty with handing Rioghnach to rescuer Davitt and thanks Connie and Theresa McIntyre for their help. Rioghnach is now 10 years old.
