Derry Mother Organises Events for 10th Anniversary of Buncrana Pier Tragedy
Louise James of Derry plans events to mark the 10th anniversary of the Buncrana Pier tragedy on March 20. Five family members died when their SUV entered Lough Swilly from a slipway. The victims were her sons Mark McGrotty, aged 12, and Evan McGrotty, aged 8, their father Sean McGrotty, aged 49, her mother Ruth Daniels, aged 57, and her sister Jodie Lee Daniels, aged 14.
Her daughter Rioghnach, then four months old, survived. Sean McGrotty passed the baby to Davitt Walsh of Kerrykeel, who swam to assist, before the vehicle sank.
Events include a mass on March 20 at 7pm in Holy Family Parish, Ballymagroarty, Derry. A 5k remembrance walk starts March 22 at 11am from Buncrana Play Park to Ned's Point. A gala ball takes place May 8 at Ebrington Hotel in Derry.
Funds raised support RNLI, emergency services and others who assisted. Joe Joyce, Lough Swilly RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, thanked James for past and upcoming fundraising.
Services that responded included Buncrana fire service, Northern Ireland Fire Service, Greencastle Coastguard, Rescue 118, An Garda Síochana, Malin Head Coastguard and multiple ambulances.
James lives in Derry, where she raised Rioghnach. Her brother Joshua Daniels lived with them after the incident.
