Infrastructure Minister Starts Road Safety TV Campaigns Following 15 Road Deaths in Early 2026
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins launched two road safety campaigns on television. The campaigns target speeding and driver behaviour as causes of road deaths and injuries.
Fifteen people died in road incidents across Northern Ireland in the first three months of 2026. Kimmins called on road users to take action to avoid more deaths and family grief.
In August 2025, Kimmins increased the road safety advertising budget by more than £1.5 million. She appeared at the launch with PSNI Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson.
The Priority List campaign addresses inattention, tailgating, and distractions that cause collisions. Kimmins said such actions lead to serious consequences.
The Control or Speed campaign focuses on speeding, particularly on rural roads. Kimmins stated that speed reduces reaction times, increases stopping distances, and worsens crash severity, and that drivers cannot combine speed with control.
The campaigns run on TV, radio, digital platforms, and outdoor media. They aim to raise awareness among all drivers, especially younger ones.
Kimmins's department reviews speed limits on rural roads and dual carriageways, HGV restrictions, and 20mph zones. A public consultation on these issues is open.
