Fermanagh Trail Reopening Faces Costs Up to £84,000 Over Erosion Risks
The Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs estimates initial costs between £36,000 and £84,000 to reopen the Cladagh Glen walking trail in Fermanagh. The path lies within the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark.
Fermanagh MLA Deborah Erskine asked Environment Minister Andrew Muir at the Northern Ireland Assembly for an update on the trail's reopening and related expenses. The minister noted persistent safety issues from erosion, risk of path collapse, and landslip potential.
The trail closed last year due to safety problems after reopening in 2024 following major repairs. Officials have engaged a specialist contractor for geotechnical evaluation but await cost confirmation before proceeding.
No timeline exists for full costs or public access restoration, as the assessment will guide a long-term solution for the path.
