The Ulster Farmers' Union is reminding farmers in Northern Ireland that the deadline for applying for a nitrates derogation is 1 March 2026.

Farmers operating above the standard organic nitrogen loading limit of 170 kgN per hectare per year should consider applying if they meet the criteria. A derogation permits a higher loading of up to 250 kgN per hectare per year on farms with grazing livestock.

The union advises farmers to review their nitrogen loading now to assess options and submit applications online to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency before the deadline.

Farmers with an approved derogation for 2025 must submit a fertilisation account by 1 March 2026. Those wishing to continue at higher stocking rates in 2026 also need to submit an application form.

Failure to submit a fertilisation account may result in penalties on area payments. Farmers seeking assistance can contact their UFU technical officer.
