UFU demands immediate launch of farm investment scheme
The Ulster Farmers’ Union has called for the immediate launch of the Sustainable Farming Investment Scheme, warning that repeated delays are causing frustration and uncertainty for farm businesses.
UFU President John McLenaghan said farmers are being expected to meet higher environmental and efficiency standards but cannot plan necessary investments without knowing what support will be available. He noted that DAERA had indicated a launch timeline but has shifted it multiple times, with no official opening date confirmed.
The scheme is intended to provide grant support for equipment and technology such as improved slurry management, precision gear, and low-emission systems. It would operate through a list of eligible items assessed by the department, with applications submitted online.
Mr McLenaghan stressed that capital investment is not optional if farmers are to deliver on requirements like the Nitrates Action Programme. He said regulation alone will not achieve environmental goals and that government must back farm businesses with meaningful financial support.
The UFU is now urging DAERA to make the scheme a priority, publish the eligible items list, and ensure the application process is straightforward. The union says any further delay will only increase pressure on an already strained sector.
