The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service deployed 40 firefighters to a large farm fire on Racecourse Road in Ballyarnett, on the outskirts of Londonderry, on Thursday.

The incident was reported shortly before 06:30 GMT. The fire spread through five large agricultural sheds behind a house in the rural area near Shantallow.

Crews from Derry, Strabane, Limavady, Dungiven, Dungannon, Pomeroy, and Kilrea attended. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three jets and two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze, which took more than six hours.

NIFRS Group Commander Barry Sands confirmed the details of the response. Part of Racecourse Road, close to the border with Donegal, was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

No injuries were reported. The fire is believed to have started accidentally.
