Derry man jailed for 12 weeks after assaulting two police officers on Peace Bridge
A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 weeks in custody after admitting to assaulting two police officers on the Peace Bridge in Derry.
Conor Dean, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on police arising from an incident on October 15.
Derry Magistrates' Court heard that police were called to a report of concern for the safety of a male on the bridge. Officers found Dean lying on the bridge with blood coming from his head and mouth.
When police spoke to him, Dean became aggressive and was handcuffed. He then headbutted one officer and elbowed another.
Defence counsel Michael Donaghy said the behaviour was "disgraceful" and that his client wished to apologise. He said alcohol was a factor in the offences.
Dean was sentenced to a total of 12 weeks in custody.
In a separate case at the same court, Jonathan Clements, 33, of Glenmore Road, was charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving with no insurance, and driving with no licence on October 13.
Police observed a vehicle being driven at speed away from the city and engaged in a short pursuit. The car was later found with an empty beer can beside the driver's seat and several unopened cans. CCTV showed two men running from the car before police arrived.
The car had been sold to Clements earlier that day. Police went to his father's address, where he was bailed to reside, but he was not there. He was arrested on October 14.
Clements has 24 previous convictions, including 11 for driving offences. Bail was granted with conditions including not being in the front seat of any vehicle. He is due back in court on November 12.
