A man from Derry has appeared in court on driving charges after he allegedly called police to report driving off a bridge.

Paul Burke, 36, of Glenabbey Close in the Skeoge area, faces charges of driving while disqualified, having no insurance, taking and driving away a vehicle, and careless driving on September 23.

Derry Magistrates' Court was told that police received a 999 call from Burke at 5am on the date in question. He reported being involved in a single vehicle accident and having driven off a bridge. He also said he had been chased by people.

Police later found Burke hiding behind a wall in Claudy. A breath test after his arrest was below the legal limit.

The car involved was registered to his partner, who had not given him permission to use it.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott described the circumstances as bizarre, saying there was no logical reason for Burke to be behind the wheel. He noted the case could go to the Crown Court, which would cause further delay.

Burke was released on bail with conditions that he not travel in the front seat of a vehicle, observe a curfew, wear an electronic tag, and abstain from alcohol.

He is due back at Derry Magistrates' Court on October 22.
