A 26-year-old Lurgan woman accused of attempting to murder a man has been granted bail by Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Karla Hanratty, of Derry Street, appeared via video link from Hydebank Prison. She is charged with attempting to murder a man on February 21. She has been in custody for seven months.

The court heard that police were called by paramedics to a house in Lurgan on that date, where a man was found with stab wounds to his back and arm. When police escorted Hanratty from the property, she stated she had stabbed him in the back with a black-handled knife, according to a PSNI officer.

Two other men and a woman were present at the house. A prosecutor said the woman told police Hanratty stabbed the complainant following an argument over claims he had been winking at the other woman. A man gave a similar account.

Hanratty indicated on July 28 that she wished to make a counter complaint against the man she is accused of attempting to murder, alleging she is a victim of domestic abuse. Police have spoken to the man, who made a further allegation against Hanratty, but she has not yet been interviewed on that matter due to scheduling constraints. The earliest interview date is December 1.

A prosecutor said Hanratty was asked following her arrest if she wanted to make a complaint and said no. Her solicitor, Philip Reid, said Hydebank Prison can only accommodate interviews on Monday afternoons, meaning the December date is the only suitable time.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan expressed dissatisfaction with the delay. The court heard Hanratty breached bail on two occasions, most recently on May 28, six days after being granted bail. Police opposed bail, citing concerns she may attempt to influence the complainant.

Her barrister, Joel Lindsay, said her defence is a claim of domestic violence and that she is struggling in custody. He suggested a bail address outside Lurgan.

Judge Ranaghan granted bail of £300 to an address approved by police. Hanratty is barred from contacting the complainant and other witnesses, barred from Lurgan, and prohibited from consuming alcohol or illicit substances. The case was adjourned to November 6.
