Westlife honour Newry mother who died after Dublin concert accident
A Newry woman who died after being injured outside a Westlife concert in Dublin has been buried in St. Joseph's Church, Sheeptown.
Danielle O'Keane, 37, passed away on 1 October. She had suffered a life-ending brain injury after being thrown from a rickshaw on 25 September while travelling from the 3Arena into Dublin city centre.
The mother of two was on life support for several days before her death. A fundraising appeal set up to help with medical costs raised approximately £130,000.
Her funeral mass took place at 2.30pm yesterday, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. A family notice described her as the much loved wife of Dave and dear mother of Caolán and Cillian, as well as the beloved daughter of Michael and Pauline and dear sister of Barry and her twin Sean.
Westlife acknowledged Ms O'Keane during a concert at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle upon Tyne. Band member Nicky Byrne said there were no words to adequately describe the tragedy and that the band's thoughts were with her mother and the entire family.
They then performed the 1999 song Flying Without Wings. Later, during You Raise Me Up, Shane Filan dedicated the song to everyone who has lost somebody they love and to Danielle. The band released drones illuminated with red lights that formed a heart shape as they encouraged the crowd to sing along. Videos of the tribute circulated on social media.
