A Strabane man will abseil 190ft down Belfast City Hospital on Saturday to raise money for cancer patients in memory of his uncle who died at age 15.

Keilith Stewart is taking part in the Take On The Tower challenge to honor David Devine, who died from cancer on Christmas Eve 2001. Stewart never met his uncle but said family members still talk about Devine and gather each Christmas Eve in the house where he died.

Devine would have turned 40 last month, prompting Stewart to mark the milestone. Stewart said he decided to do something that would challenge him and take him out of his comfort zone. He saw abseiling on television and signed up for the local event.

Stewart said he is terrified of heights but will have support from his mother and trained professionals. He registered for 9.45am ahead of a potential 11am descent.

A JustGiving page has raised £366 towards a £500 target. The money will go to Friends of Cancer Centre NI, which supports cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland. The page will remain open until January.

Stewart said he is looking forward to facing his fears while remembering his uncle and raising money for the charity.
