Fermanagh and Omagh recycling rate misses target for sixth straight year
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has failed to meet its household recycling target for the sixth consecutive year.
Households recycled 48.1 per cent of waste in 2025/26, below the 50 per cent target, according to a council report. The figure is provisional and subject to verification, with a final number expected in November 2026.
The district ranked 10th out of 11 Northern Ireland councils for household recycling. The rate improved from 47.7 per cent the previous year but remains under target.
Landfilling has ceased in the district. The council reported that the majority of waste processing is now directed towards recycling or refuse-derived fuel.
The amount of biodegradable municipal waste sent to landfill fell to approximately 3,676 tonnes in 2025/26, down from 8,715 tonnes the prior year. The target was less than 13,781 tonnes.
The council said improving recycling rates is part of its Climate Action priority and will be monitored under its 2024-28 corporate plan.
The council also said it is committed to developing an efficient waste and recycling service and educating residents to improve recycling behaviours.
