Irish indie-folk band Kingfishr has forged an unlikely link with English League One club Wycombe Wanderers, after a song they wrote about the club gained traction online. The connection began when the band started playing the video game Fifa 11 while recording their second album and adopted Wycombe as their team. They then posted a song titled 'The Wycombe Wanderer' on TikTok, which has been viewed more than 190,000 times.

The club took notice and responded to the post, saying the band could 'wander our way anytime.' On Tuesday night, lead singer Eddie Keogh attended Wycombe's EFL Trophy match against Bristol Rovers at Adams Park, which the home side won 4-1. The song was played over the stadium tannoy as he arrived. Keogh was presented with a Wycombe shirt bearing 'Kingfishr 1' on the back.

A Wycombe Wanderers spokesperson said discovering the song was 'brilliant' and that fate allowed Keogh to visit the stadium, watch a game, meet players and learn more about the club. The spokesperson added that many players are fans of the band and the song has gone down well with supporters, potentially becoming a terrace anthem. Kingfishr are welcome back at Adams Park at any time, the spokesperson said.

Kingfishr, from Limerick, have had chart success in Ireland with hits such as Killeagh, Diamonds & Roses and The Sun Will Never Settle. Killeagh, which details a community's attachment to a local GAA club, topped the Irish charts on three separate occasions. The band have a history of sporting connections and earlier this year played in Londonderry, where they were presented with shirts belonging to local clubs.
