Farmers' Choir NI has been selected as the sole Northern Ireland finalist for the Making Music UK Group of the Year Award 2026.

The cross-community choir, based in Ballymena, draws its members from farming, agriculture, and rural communities across Northern Ireland. More than 40 members attend weekly rehearsals at Ballymena Academy on Monday evenings.

The choir has also received recognition locally, being named Highly Commended in the Society of the Year category at the Northern Ireland Farming Awards.

Musical Director Barkley Thompson said that the group provides friendship and community, and that the sense of community and laughter is a big part of what keeps people coming back.

Chairperson Johnston Adams described the recognition as a tremendous achievement and said the choir is very proud of its members.

During the summer, the choir held a treasure hunt that attracted 35 cars and more than 120 people, with an evening of fun followed by refreshments and prizes at Ballymena Academy.

The choir has a programme of upcoming performances, including concerts at The Braid Arts Centre in Ballymena closer to Christmas, as well as a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Patrick's Parish Church in Kilrea and Drummaul Parish Church in Randalstown.

Farmers' Choir NI continues to welcome new members who enjoy singing and wish to be part of a friendly group connected to rural communities.
