A vehicle pursuit in County Antrim ended with the car in a ditch and the driver escaping on foot, police have said.

A roads policing officer on a motorcycle signaled a Volkswagen to stop in the Rathkenny area of Ballymena on Tuesday afternoon. The driver failed to stop and a pursuit began.

The driver headed towards Broughshane and then Carnlough, leading police for about 20 minutes before attempting to go off-road and losing control. The car crashed into a ditch. The driver ran away into undergrowth and has not yet been located.

The Volkswagen has been seized for forensic examination in an effort to identify the driver.

Police thanked members of the public in Carnlough who assisted officers in locating the vehicle in the town.
