Five kittens were rescued from a boat in Cookstown after their mother did not return for four days. A member of the public contacted Cats Protection, which brought the animals to its Northern Ireland Cat Centre in Belfast.

The kittens were about five weeks old and had upset stomachs when they arrived. Cats Protection staff gave them veterinary treatment and fed them small meals frequently.

Lauren Howard, community fundraising officer for Cats Protection, said the kittens were still young enough to be socialised without causing them unnecessary anxiety. Older kittens with no positive human contact can become highly stressed in care. The kittens were initially hissy but have become more relaxed with attention from staff and volunteers.

The litter includes two females and three males, named Mermaid, Olive, Skipper, Tug and Sailor. They will be available for adoption once they are ready. The charity estimates their care, including vet checks, treatment, neutering, vaccines, worming, flea treatment and microchips, will cost over £2,000. A fundraising drive has been launched to cover costs.
