Two men were arrested on Thursday 27 August after police pursued a vehicle at high speed from Markethill towards the border at Newry.

Officers were conducting an anti-burglary operation when they became involved in a pursuit of a black VW Golf on the Gosford Road, Markethill. The car made off towards the border, travelling at high speed.

Detective Sergeant Johnston said the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Air Support Unit and Interceptor Team apprehended the suspects with the assistance of local police. An Garda Síochána were also involved in the operation, carrying out border checkpoints that prevented the suspects from leaving Northern Ireland.

A man aged in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of burglary and a number of driving offences including dangerous driving. A second man, aged in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Both men remained in custody and were assisting police with enquiries, police said.
