Newtownbutler residents have marked what would have been Mickey McPhillips' 60th birthday with a community walk and a commitment to continue supporting people affected by mental health difficulties and suicide bereavement.

McPhillips died in 2020. His family subsequently established Ray of Hope, an initiative that offers support to people experiencing mental health difficulties and to families affected by suicide bereavement.

On 17 August, family members, friends and community members walked from Newtownbutler to Galloon Island to remember McPhillips. Cora Quigley, Ray of Hope chairperson and McPhillips' sister, said the event was a fitting way to remember her brother. She said participants included people walking and children on bikes, and that the rain did not dampen spirits.

Quigley said Ray of Hope was created to bring hope to families facing similar experiences. The initiative also remembers McPhillips as a talented videographer who carried out extensive work in the community.
