Police in Craigavon are investigating a burglary at the vacant Brownlow Leisure Centre that caused substantial internal damage, with repair costs expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds.

The break-in was reported shortly after 10:10am on Monday 17 August. Officers believe the incident happened over the weekend between Friday 14 August and Sunday 16 August.

Sergeant Graham said officers have received a number of recent reports of young people gathering in the area and are exploring a potential link to the burglary. Visible patrols will increase to deter further anti-social behaviour at the site.

Parents and guardians have been asked to speak to young people about where they are and who they are with. Involvement in such activity could result in injury to themselves or others, or a criminal record that might affect future employment or travel.

The leisure centre had been earmarked for redevelopment. On 12 August, R8 Church confirmed it had been selected as the council's preferred bidder in partnership with Healthy Kidz and Ambassadors Football Ireland. The group plans to create Brownlow Family Life Centre with an auditorium, community social cafe, activity hall, multi-use games rooms, a clubhouse space and an outdoor activity yard.
