A 44-year-old Derry woman has been charged with common assault following an incident at her home in Farren Park.

Corrina McDaid was arrested on 12 August after her mother contacted police to report that her daughter was having a mental health crisis and had assaulted her.

Officers took McDaid to Altnagelvin Hospital for mental health assessment before she was brought to a police station for questioning, where she admitted the assault.

She also told police that her mother could leave if she could not cope with the situation.

At court, it was stated that McDaid had recently been released from Grangewood and had not been taking prescribed medication. She is reported to have said she believed healthcare was profit-driven.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court that the complainant, McDaid's mother, is willing to have her daughter return home and does not intend to provide a police statement.

District Judge Ted Magill granted bail with conditions including an address approved by police. He noted that the condition barring contact with her mother would be a practical difficulty.

McDaid is due to appear again on 17 August.
