A 43-year-old Portadown man has been refused bail after appearing at Craigavon Magistrates Court charged with indecent exposure near a nursery school.

Philip Michael Wilson of Garvaghy Park faces charges of exposing himself to a group of school children and to a female police officer near Garvaghy Road on August 12. He is also charged with possessing the Class C drug Zopiclone on the same date.

The court heard police received a report of a man acting suspiciously outside Naiscoil Na Banna, an Irish language nursery school. A complainant described a man matching Wilson's description pulling down his trousers in view of the playground.

Police later found Wilson in a nearby cemetery and arrested him. Officers said he walked toward a female officer with his penis exposed. Six Zopiclone tablets were found after his arrest.

Defence solicitor Jarlath Fields argued that CCTV footage contradicts the allegations. He said Wilson was visiting a grave at a cemetery adjacent to the school and went into bushes to relieve himself. The solicitor said the footage shows Wilson retrieving a football from the school fence, speaking with a teacher, and throwing the ball back before leaving.

Mr Fields said his client denies exposing himself to the police officer and that the nursery worker's statement does not match the CCTV evidence. He described Wilson as a chronic alcoholic who drinks every day and has adhered to bail conditions since October 2025.

The court heard Wilson has a previous indecent assault conviction from a drunken interaction in 2024 and is awaiting sentencing at Antrim Crown Court on September 15. Mr Fields said Wilson has no history of this type of offending and has not been in trouble since last October.

Deputy District Judge Austin Kennedy refused bail, citing concerns that Wilson might commit further similar offences. The case was adjourned until September 11.
