Police in Derry have begun an operation to address drivers who pass cyclists with insufficient space.

The initiative, called Operation Close Pass, uses a police cyclist who communicates directly with a Maydown Interceptor unit. The unit is ready to respond to vehicles that fail to keep a safe passing distance.

Authorities report that recent good weather has brought more cyclists onto the roads, making the operation timely.

Motorists are reminded that they must give cyclists at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) of clearance when overtaking. More space is recommended at higher speeds. Drivers should signal before moving out to overtake and must not cut in sharply afterwards.

The police emphasized that roads are shared spaces and safe passing saves lives.
