Police in Northern Ireland call on drivers and motorcyclists to exercise caution as spring weather draws more bikes onto the roads. Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson, Head of Road Policing, noted an uptick in motorcycle use during this season due to longer days.

Motorcyclists face greater risks in collisions, with statistics indicating they are 125 times more likely to suffer fatal or serious injuries than car drivers over the same distance. Riders lack the protection afforded to those in enclosed vehicles, making them vulnerable to impacts from other vehicles or falls.

Drivers should check junctions twice before pulling out and stay vigilant for bikes, as inattention contributes to many crashes. Chief Inspector Simpson stressed that careless driving often leads to serious incidents.

Motorcyclists must adapt to conditions, respect other users, and verify their bikes and gear before rides. Police plan vehicle checkpoints and BikeSafe workshops to promote safety among riders, passengers, and others.

Chief Inspector Simpson emphasized shared road responsibility, advising all to slow down, focus on surroundings, and avoid operating vehicles after consuming alcohol or drugs.
