The Police Service of Northern Ireland has launched an investigation after a video circulated on social media appearing to show an individual attempting to raise a flag linked to the loyalist paramilitary group the Ulster Freedom Fighters at a bonfire in Derry.

Sinn Fein Councillor Emma McGinley said the footage appeared to show PSNI officers observing the incident without taking any enforcement action. She called on the police to explain why no intervention took place and demanded a full investigation into the circumstances.

A police spokesperson confirmed officers in Derry were aware of the video and were conducting enquiries. If it is determined that an offence occurred, the circumstances will be investigated in line with service guidance.

The spokesperson added that officers continue to engage with local communities and partner agencies regarding complaints involving flags.

The Ulster Freedom Fighters is a cover name used by the Ulster Defence Association, a loyalist paramilitary organisation active during the Troubles. Displaying paramilitary flags in public can constitute an offence under counter-terrorism legislation.
