Loyalist 'two-tier policing' protest in Derry under police investigation for unnotified procession
A loyalist demonstration against what organisers called "two-tier policing" took place in Derry on the evening of October 13 and is now being investigated by police as an unnotified procession. Around 60 people gathered and proceeded from the Dennet Gardens area of the Irish Street estate to the PSNI station on Lisnagelvin Road in the Waterside area.
Police issued a warning to participants about being involved in an un-notified procession. The procession paused outside the police station before moving towards the Crescent Link junction, where those involved dispersed. A further protest took place in the Irish Street area at around 8.40pm and ended by 9pm.
During the demonstration, freelance journalist Aodhán Roberts said he was threatened while filming near the Crescent Link. He reported that protesters took position on a crash barrier and one told him: "If you want to get out of here safe and sound, no filming." Another person swore at him. Roberts said the incident was a clear attempt to intimidate him and prevent journalists from doing their job, and he would not be deterred from reporting.
The PSNI confirmed that enquiries are ongoing into the unnotified procession.
