Larne Golden Gloves boxer Reece McKeown has returned from a trip to the United States with two victories, while the east Antrim club also secured a strong medal haul at the Wild Atlantic Box Cup in Ballina, County Mayo.

McKeown travelled with Bridges Beyond Boxing Ireland, competing and training in Buffalo and Boston. In Buffalo he won a split decision after showing movement and ring craft. His second bout in Boston ended with another win, as he consistently landed cleaner punches.

Larne Golden Gloves coach Chris Ireland said McKeown represented his family, club and town well, and that crossing the Atlantic to defeat unfamiliar opponents was a major achievement. He added that the experience would help the boxer develop and described the opportunity as invaluable.

Five fighters from the club entered the Wild Atlantic Box Cup. Brian Magill saw his semi-final opponent withdraw, then lost a split decision in the under-19 65kg final to take silver. McKeown beat a multiple-time Irish champion by split decision to win under-19 60kg gold. Jay Mackness won the senior novice 70kg final by unanimous decision, and Josh Rea took under-19 50kg gold with a composed performance.

Head coach Chris McAllister said every boxer represented themselves and the club brilliantly, and that the tournament provided quality experience that would benefit them in future.
