A security alert in Bangor ended on Friday night after army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suspected historic munition.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland received a report of a suspicious object near the pitches at Ward Park around 5.15 pm on 26 June. Officers cordoned off the area for public safety.

Ammunition Technical Officers attended the scene and destroyed the device at approximately 8.40 pm. The remains were then taken to a secure location for forensic analysis.

The PSNI lifted the cordons shortly after the operation and thanked residents and park users for their cooperation. Investigations are continuing, and police have asked anyone with information to come forward, referencing 101 and the incident number 1428 of 26/06/26.
