18-Year-Old Driver Charged After 100mph Pursuit Ends in Maghera Field
An 18-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after a police pursuit in County Londonderry that reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
The incident began when the driver of a Seat Leon spotted a police interceptor vehicle in the Kilrea area and fled. Officers from several PSNI units, including the Sprucefield-based interceptor team, Mid Ulster, and Causeway Coast and Glens, pursued the vehicle. The PSNI Air Support Unit also assisted.
The pursuit ended on a bend near Maghera when the driver left the road and the car came to rest in a farmer's field. The man was arrested and held overnight before appearing before court the following day.
He faces charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance, and possession of Class A and Class B controlled drugs. The Seat Leon was seized by police.
It was not the driver's first encounter with police this year. In February, he was involved in a similar incident that also ended with his vehicle leaving the road and entering a field. That case remains before the courts.
