A Derry and Strabane councillor has issued a safety appeal to anyone attending this year’s Donegal Rally.

Councillor Leonard, who represents the Sperrin ward, said the public highway must not be treated as a competition stage.

Drawing on his experience as a former fire officer with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, he recalled seeing the serious consequences of speeding.

He urged drivers to observe posted limits, remain alert and watch for pedestrians and cyclists.

Journeys should be planned in advance, extra time allowed, and no one should get behind the wheel after drinking.

When the rally begins, he said, the racing should only happen on the closed special stages.
