Annual Clonard Novena Begins at West Belfast Monastery
The annual Clonard Solemn Novena commenced at Clonard Monastery in West Belfast on June 17, running for nine days until June 25. The event honours Our Lady of Perpetual Help and brings together worshippers from across the region.
This year's theme, 'Called and Sent', focuses on the concept of missionary discipleship. Fr Brendan Kelly, rector of the monastery, explained that the reflection encourages participants to listen and then go out into the world to continue their mission. Each day has its own sub-theme and features various speakers.
Around 150 volunteers prepared for the Novena, an effort Fr Oan Runi described as essential to the event. All sessions are live-streamed online, generating significant interest on social media in the lead-up.
The congregation reflects changing demographics in the area, including attendees from India, the Philippines and various African countries. Fr Kelly highlighted the importance of welcoming people from all traditions, including during a dedicated inter-faith day. The Novena also marks the centenary of Saint Gerardo Maiella, a Redemptorist brother.
Special services include the Sacrament of the Sick on June 20, and a thanksgiving procession after the final 8pm Mass on June 25.
