Derry Cinema to Host Conductology Documentary and Album Launch
Derry’s Brunswick Moviebowl will host a screening of a documentary about Conductology, an inclusive music-making system developed in Northern Ireland. The event will also feature a panel discussion and the launch of the debut album, Spring Awakening, by the North West Conductology orchestra.
Conductology is a system of eighteen physical gestures designed by Dr Denise White at Ulster University. It allows individuals with additional needs, or those previously excluded from music-making, to compose and perform music in various settings. The organisation states that the approach is scientifically researched and proven.
According to its creators, the system delivers significant personal benefits to participants. It is currently being introduced in special schools and mainstream schools across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Conductology C.I.C., the community interest company behind the project, is also working with partners in North America to bring the methodology to schools, communities, and healthcare providers.
Dr Denise White, the artistic director of Conductology C.I.C., described the innovation as a world first. She noted that training for individuals to become Conductologists is being rolled out in collaboration with the International School of Musicians, extending the programme internationally.
Dr White is a multi-award-winning special needs educator and author of The Music Improvisation Model for Children, published in 2020.
