PSNI Appeals for Calm as 19 Arrested in Disorder Probe
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has appealed for peaceful protests this weekend, warning that it will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to any violence, intimidation or criminal acts. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson stressed that while the rights to freedom of speech and assembly are protected, they are limited by the need to uphold the rights of others and prevent crime.
The reminder came as the PSNI confirmed that 19 arrests have been made in connection with recent disorder. A total of 21 suspects have been identified, with 12 individuals now charged and remanded in custody. The Public Order Enquiry Team is continuing its investigation into offences including racially-motivated attacks and hate-filled social media posts.
Assistant Chief Constable Henderson warned that further arrests will follow, with officers releasing images of people they wish to identify. Evidence-gathering assets have been deployed and footage captured will be reviewed by the enquiry team.
Members of the public with photos or footage, including CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam recordings, are urged to share them via the Major Incident Public Portal. The PSNI said a heightened police presence will remain in towns and cities, supported by mutual aid resources from GB policing colleagues.
