Formal Investigation Launched into Omagh Banging Noise Mystery
A formal investigation has been initiated into a persistent loud noise in Omagh that residents say has been disrupting their sleep for months.
The noise, described as similar to a gunshot, has been reported in the Shandon Park area and can be heard at all hours of the day and night.
Resident Eugene Floyd said the bangs began roughly three to four months ago. Officials from Northern Ireland Electricity, NI Water and the Evolve natural gas network inspected the area but found nothing suspicious. The Police Service of Northern Ireland also carried out checks and found no source.
The Environmental Health Service has provided Mr Floyd with a logbook to record how often the noise occurs.
Carol Glass, another Shandon Park resident, said she has been woken as early as 4.30am by the sound. She estimated it happens three or four times during the day, even with the television on loud.
She added that neighbours have expressed fear because the noise resembles a gunshot, and that the situation is causing frustration and anxiety.
Sinn Féin councillor Barry McElduff said he is in contact with residents and senior environmental health officials at Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. He confirmed a formal investigation is now underway and said he will keep residents updated until the source is found.
