Kesh residents oppose sale of Mantlin Playing Fields for housing
More than 80 residents attended the Kesh Development Association (KDA) annual general meeting on May 26 to oppose the proposed sale of Mantlin Playing Fields by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council for housing development.
At the meeting, held in the village Community Centre, a new committee of 18 members and seven office bearers was elected.
Attendees raised concerns that losing the green space would harm mental and physical wellbeing, particularly for older people, children, and vulnerable groups. They also pointed to what they described as an inadequate sewage infrastructure, questioning the suitability of additional housing.
Residents argued the proposed sale contradicts the objectives of the Community Plan, and expressed disappointment over the lack of consultation before the plans were advanced.
The issue was subsequently discussed at a recent council meeting. Councillor Eddie Roofe called for direct engagement between the council and the newly elected KDA committee, proposing that council representatives meet with the association to discuss the future of the fields and support any community-led proposals. The motion, seconded by Councillor Adam Gannon, was supported.
The future of Mantlin Fields remains a key issue for the community, with residents continuing to oppose the disposal of the playing fields.
