Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly has praised the community of West Belfast at the annual Best of the West awards.

The ceremony took place at the Devenish on Friday evening, marking the end of Cllr Donnelly’s first week in the role.

Addressing approximately 400 guests, the Lord Mayor highlighted the area’s character. She described West Belfast as welcoming, resilient, supportive, and ambitious, noting that residents had created their own opportunities for growth and regeneration in the face of adversity.

She attributed the community’s strength to its small businesses, voluntary organisations, youth groups, sports clubs, and local leaders. The awards recognise achievements in community endeavour, environmental stewardship, entrepreneurship, and local leadership.

Cllr Donnelly said the event gave an opportunity to spotlight people who rarely seek recognition but deserve it. She thanked attendees for making West Belfast stronger, kinder, and more hopeful.
