Community mourns sudden death of Beragh school principal Barry Conroy
The funeral of Barry Conroy took place in Beragh, County Tyrone, following his sudden death last week at the age of 49. Mr Conroy had served as principal of St Oliver Plunkett’s Primary School for four years, having taught at the school for 26 years.
Staff members flanked the cortege from his home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Pupils from St Oliver Plunkett’s, Roscavey Primary, and St Ciaran’s College in Ballygawley joined members of Beragh Red Knights GAA in forming a guard of honour.
In his homily, parish priest Fr Sean McCartan said the community had been left in a state of shock and sorrow. He described the days since Mr Conroy’s death as surreal, with people experiencing a sense of disbelief.
Fr McCartan remembered Mr Conroy as a key figure in the parish and a model parishioner. He said that as principal, Mr Conroy was devoted to creating opportunities for every child, providing a rounded education that included sports and music, and teaching tolerance.
The priest noted that Mr Conroy was known as a firm but fair leader who was professional and hardworking. Among the items brought to the altar was his schoolbag, which Fr McCartan observed had been packed and ready for the day when he administered last rites.
Mr Conroy was also involved with the local GAA club, where he promoted links between the school and the club and emphasised its role in guiding young people. In the parish, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Minister of the Word, and chair of the liturgy group.
