Two planning applications have been submitted for purpose-built student accommodation on Strand Road in Derry, proposing a combined total of 849 bed spaces.

NGSK Developments is seeking permission for a 525-bed block at 162 Strand Road, the former Desmond Motors showroom site. The plans include a courtyard, gym, quiet study area, car parking and bicycle storage.

GMKM Developments has applied for a 324-bed block across the road at 173 Strand Road. Its proposals include a gym, courtyard, amenity spaces and bicycle storage.

A pre-application consultation event was held before Christmas.

Design statements prepared by Like on behalf of the applicants describe the schemes as a strategic response to rising demand for student housing. They state the developments have been carefully considered in terms of location, design and scale, aiming to integrate with the surrounding urban context, support regeneration and boost the local economy. The design approach prioritises accessibility, safety and environmental performance, aligning with current planning policy.
