BT has submitted two planning applications to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for a new digital street hub at the entrance to The Mall in Armagh.

The proposed hub would be located on the footpath opposite Armagh Gaol and would replace an existing phone kiosk and poster panel.

The structure would include two 75-inch LCD advertising displays and provide ultrafast wi-fi, small cell technology and rapid charge ports.

The applications include one for advertising consent.

A supporting statement submitted with the application states that the hub would remove redundant payphone infrastructure and return space to the pavement.

The statement notes that the site is on previously developed land within an established pedestrian area and that only static images would be shown on the displays with a minimum 10-second interval between changes.

The council previously approved a similar installation in Banbridge town centre.
