Postal delays leave Fermanagh driver uninsured for 10 days
A Fermanagh resident has reported driving without car insurance for 10 days after delayed post prevented him from renewing his policy.
Martin McGovern returned home on Monday to find six letters delivered together, including three from Admiral Insurance. The first, dated April 12, gave a renewal quote of £526. A second letter reminded him of the payment due, and a third, dated in May, stated the policy had been cancelled from May 8.
McGovern said the delay left him unknowingly uninsured between May 8 and the date he received the letters. He noted the risk of being stopped by police or facing consequences in the event of an accident.
The incident forms part of wider reports of postal delays across Fermanagh. McGovern said residents from Clabby to Belleek have contacted him about missing or late mail, including an elderly relative in Belleek whose bank statement arrived weeks late.
A Letterbreen businessman missed a hospital eye appointment after his letter arrived after the scheduled time. Another resident whose husband is receiving cancer treatment said letters from the hospital arrived after the appointment dates.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has written to Royal Mail about the issues. Royal Mail said deliveries continue daily and that high volumes can cause some items to be delivered the following day.
McGovern, a former local councillor who previously worked for Royal Mail for 13 years, said the problems affect vulnerable people who rely on timely mail for medical and financial matters.
