Lurgan woman detained in Gaza aid flotilla interception
A Lurgan woman was detained after Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla bound for Gaza.
Helena Kearns was among Irish citizens held when the Global Sumud Flotilla was stopped in international waters west of Cyprus.
The flotilla carried humanitarian aid including food, baby formula and medical supplies for Gaza.
Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd expressed support for Kearns and called for the Irish and British governments to hold Israel to account.
Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan described the interception as a violation of international law and condemned the blockade.
President Catherine Connolly said the detention of her sister Dr Margaret Connolly was upsetting.
Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin called the detention of Irish citizens unacceptable and said Ireland would raise the matter at EU level.
Tánaiste Simon Harris said the action breached international law and his thoughts were with the families of those detained.
