Development of 46 new homes in Poleglass is facing delays after repeated vandalism at the construction site beside the Church of the Nativity on Bell Steele Road.

Basil O'Malley of Newpark Homes, the Co Tyrone-based developer, said work began in July and since then four diggers have been damaged, with further damage to diggers occurring two weeks ago. Fencing and pipework stored at the rear of the site were set alight, causing up to £50,000 in damage. Security has now been hired for the site.

The costs of the damage and security are substantial, O'Malley said, adding that continued vandalism will only set the project back. The homes are intended for the benefit of the local community, he said.

A fire was also started at the rear of the church, and slates on the church were damaged. Fr Nideesh Varghese from the Church of the Nativity said the fire was spotted quickly and there was no damage, but the vandalism was unfortunate. Work is ongoing to keep the chapel open and ensure safe access for parishioners during construction.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey described the damage as unacceptable and urged parents to speak to their children and ask them to stay away from the site. He noted the development will provide 46 family homes for people waiting to move in. Local MLA Danny Baker added that the church is a sacred place and the homes are of huge importance to the community.
