Bail Variation Denied for Dungannon Man Over Leg Swelling from Tag
A 73-year-old man from Dungannon faces ongoing bail conditions after a court rejected his request to remove an electronic tag causing leg swelling.
John Coleman of Lake View Cottages applied to vary his bail at Omagh Magistrates Court. He faces charges of preparing terrorist acts and perverting the course of justice. The charges connect to the February 2023 attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.
Coleman's doctor reported swelling in his leg and sought tag removal. The monitoring company Buddi proposed a wrist monitor instead.
Defence counsel Peter Corrigan stated Coleman posed no flight risk due to family ties in the Ardboe area and his clean criminal record. Corrigan added Coleman experienced severe pain from the tag with no prospect of breaching conditions.
District Judge Conor Heaney ruled the medical report reflected only Coleman's complaint without further updates. He refused the application.
Coleman will return to Omagh Magistrates Court on May 26.
