Finance Minister O’Dowd Pledges Family Law Changes After Domestic Homicides
Northern Ireland Finance Minister John O’Dowd announced plans to amend family law. The changes would automatically remove parental responsibility from individuals convicted of murdering or committing voluntary manslaughter against someone with whom they share parental responsibility.
O’Dowd stated that he recognizes the severe long-term effects on children and families when such offenders retain parental responsibility. He directed officials to begin policy work, incorporating measures similar to Jade’s Law from Britain.
Jade’s Law exists on the statute books in Britain but remains uncommenced. O’Dowd said Northern Ireland officials will draw lessons from it and other jurisdictions to create legislation suited to the local legal system.
The minister aims to strengthen protections for children and families impacted by serious crimes. He plans to introduce a bill early in the next Assembly mandate.
