Ulster Flying Club Establishes Bursary Fund for Student Pilots
The Ulster Flying Club in Newtownards has launched five bursaries for student pilots. The fund follows an anonymous donation and contributions from club members.
The UFC 2026 Student Bursary Fund targets learners with at least 20 flying hours who have completed a first solo flight or reached solo standard. It covers flight training, ground school and materials at the club.
UFC Chairman Mark McConville stated the bursaries support students committed to training, whether for commercial airline careers or general aviation goals. He noted the initiative invests in Northern Ireland aviation.
A private pilot licence requires a minimum of 45 hours of flight time and costs £15,000 to £17,000. A national private pilot licence needs 32 hours and runs £4,000 to £7,000.
The fund coincides with the club's 65th anniversary since its founding in 1961. Club members can apply by emailing fly@ulsterflyingclub.com before April 25. A panel selects recipients based on progress and aspirations.
